Top-down Infant Hat
Jul 25th, 2007 by jennifer
I started making hats for Alex. I found that a top-down pattern was easier for me to work with because I could use odd-size balls of yarn. For cast-on, I use a figure 8 cast on where I knit the first row after the cast-on and then divide between three needles.
Ability: Beginner/Intermediate
Sizing: newborn 12”/ 36cm
DK Weight yarn (I used Dreambaby by Plymouth Yarns – 50gm ball makes 3 hats)
Gauge: 20 sts = 4 in / 10 cm
Yardage: 61 yards /16 grams per hat
Needles: 3.5 mm (size 4 U.S.) –double pointed needles
OR size to obtain gauge
stitch marker
darning needle
Special Instructions:
m1: pick up the stitch below the last stitch knitted and knit this stitch through the back loop, twisting the stitch.
CO 8 sts dividing them between 3-dpn. Place marker at the beginning of the row.
Rnd 1 and all odd rounds: knit
Rnd 2: *k1, m1* - repeat ** around - 16 sts
Rnd 4: *k1, m1,k1* – repeat ** around - 24 sts
Rnd 6: *k1, m1,k2* – repeat ** around - 32 sts
Rnd 8: *k1, m1,k3* – repeat ** around - 40 sts
Rnd 10: *k1, m1,k4* – repeat ** around - 48 st
Rnd 12: *k1, m1,k5* – repeat ** around - 56 sts
Rnd 14: *k1, m1,k6* – repeat ** around - 64 sts
Continue to knit in the round until hat measures 6” from crown to bottom edge. Bind off loosely (this will create the rolled brim).

hi. if i am trying to knit a hat using the figure 8 cast on that has a total of 40 sts, how do i divide them to 3 dpns??? the patterns website is :
http://www.helloyarn.com/topdownbonnet.htm
please help.
I looked at the pattern and it seems that you put half of the stitches (20 on one needle for the front, and one quarter of the stitches on each of two needles for the back (10 stitches on each needle). Three other ways you can do this are, 1) use four needles for the stitches (if you have a set of 5 double points) or 2) use two circular needles http://www.az.com/~andrade/knit/twocirculars.html , or 3) the magic loop method http://www.az.com/~andrade/knit/mloop.html
If you are using the Turkish cast on or figure 8 cast on, using two circular needles is easier because they are bendy.
I hope this helps.
