I recently had occasion to visit the Hudson Valley Fiber Farm for their Spring Sheep Shearing. It seems like such a small thing. Sheep. Shearer. Fleece ready to become yarn. When I watched this video taken at the shearing, I found myself completely vaklempt…lump in my throat, tears in my eyes. It’s hard to say why. Maybe it’s just that in this crazy, mixed-up world there are still some things that make perfect sense. Susan’s Fiber Farms (Hudson Valley and Martha’s Vineyard) CSAs being two of them. Letsknit2gether.com made this video:
Hudson Valley Fiber Farm Sheep Shearing
Before attending the sheep shearing, I’d never even seen the Lamb Cam. When I mentioned this to another fan of the Fiber Farm, they gasped!
I said,”You mean people sit in front of their computers and watch sheep?” I often feel as if I don’t have enough time for sleep so it was difficult to imagine anyone having time to watch sheep.
But that’s the point.
I’ve been back to the Hudson Valley Sheep Farm a couple of times now and have even the chance to feed one of the babies (whose picture is now my desktop). I find myself thinking about standing in that pen with the muddy sheep and goats, watching the chickens run around the yard, and I get all Liz Lemon, “I want to go there”.
I have a sneaking suspicion it’s about more than just the bucolic setting. I think it has to do with the infectious conviction radiating from Susan Gibbs that with commitment, dedicated hard work, and a lot of good humor, we can all make our little corner of the world a better place.
Just in case I wasn’t sure of what the Fiber Farms’ message to me is, I got it when I read the blog yesterday (not the post titled This is How Much I love You):
I am a winner! That’s right! Precious booty from the Cowgirl Hall of Fame, my very own cowgirl coffee mug! If I ever forget that, I’ll just fill up my mug and find a few quiet moments with the lam cam.

I want to go there too. Susan Gibbs is awesome, I think.
