Crochet and Canoes

The crochet madness continued and I finished my Circles to Squares Afghan. The squares are a little wonky when put together, despite the fact that they were all the proper sizes as individual squares. But I’m way over it. Afghans in my house can usually be found wrapped around a family member or under the furry head of a pet. None of them have every complained about any afghan except to comment that they’d like them bigger or without the holes found in a granny square.
I’m still limping along with my Summer of Socks 2008 intentions. One pair finished. It’s a bit of a contrast to my insane sock knitting for last year’s SOS. I’ve been distracted, however. Here is Nancy Bush’s Fancy Silk Sock, modified to be knit toe-up…
I’m working on a number of things that do not bear photographing. I’ve been designing, swatching, and ripping back. It’s been fun, like solving a puzzle, but it doesn’t make for pretty blogging.
And in case you thought my life was all yarny goodness, all the time,
M and I forced Jessye to go canoeing on the Housatonic River on Saturday. She came home from NYC and said she wanted to be outdoors all the time to soak up nature. Her hope was to bring the feeling of green back with her to the city. M wanted to go further up the river, but Jessye wasn’t going to go if there were anything the color of rapids involved.
After we took her to the train on Sunday, M, Olivia, and I went again, putting the canoe in further up the river near Gaylordsville. I was pretty panicked a couple of times because we were just down the river from the rapids where I over-turned my kayak last summer (and was completely freaked out for a while afterwards). We did hit a few rocky areas, but the canoe is more stable than the kayak, and we made it back to New Milford safely. I’m way past the point where I have to prove to anyone that I am rugged and fearless. I choose to think of it as having a healthy respect for the river.
This spot is less than a mile from my house. I’m always amazed because it looks and feels as if we are miles from civilization.

Don’t you love “urban wildlife?” We don’t have it quite that good here in Northern NJ but close.
Love the blanket. Now you need to work on crochet ON canoes!
